artists' café talk

Dialogue with Joel Lukhovi and Alan Alpenfelt on collaborations and cultural exchanges between Kenya and Switzerland.

Join us for a special double Artists' Cafe conversation at Casa Azul in Gordola on sunday, september 6th at 3:00 PM with Joel Lukhovi, photographer and curator of nairobi beyond foto. It will be moderated by Alan Alpenfelt, a thespian and radio director who met each other in nairobi during his research trip in 2025. The two practitioners will discuss diverse modes of collaboration and the importance of cross cultural exchanges. 

Joel will introduce the Swiss public to nairobi beyond foto, an initiative that explores contemporary lens-based practices and unconventional formats of showcasing photography through various curatorial interventions. He is on a research residency with verzasca foto association in valley verzasca with particular focus on nature, a central theme to his study. The talk coincides with the closing ceremony of the exhibition Soft Linings by Jess Holdengarde and Massimiliano Rossetto. 

The two events united by photography, explore through different languages ​​and perspectives, and the connection each of the artists has with Verzasca Valley. The research residency program is supported by Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia Johannesburg which supports international artistic exchange and development of future collaborations between Swiss and international cultural practitioners. 

We will conclude with an aperitif-dinner by Duska Beretta.

This saturday we are pleased to be joined with Savalla Vanessa, a kenyan based artist working with photograohy, film and storytellling. The session will showcase a selection of her ongoing project where her practice draws attention to moments of emotion, strangeness and silence. 

Savalla will take us through an exciting selection of her work and share insights into the making of "nyumbani kwa mama"
